What’s the deal with this Mumia Abu-Jamal character?
I have seen posters in support of this guy all over the place over the years primarily on college campuses. Apparently he shot and killed a cop back in the 80′s and is on death row. Now I hate cops as much as the next guy and I oppose the death penalty and our current criminal justice system generally but nobody deserves to be murdered do they? Why is Mumia such an icon for some people? What am I missing here?

How To Be Popular In College (For Guys)
Your lifestyle is a major factor which determines whether you will be popular in college. At university, people judge your “coolness” with one glance. They look at the subtle cues of your lifestyle and immediately slot you into one of two categories: cool or not cool.
Let’s say for some reason, you met a girl at a party, you take her on a date and then she stopped talking to you after that first date. Often women realise when they spend time with you alone, your lifestyle was not congruent with the cool guy they meet the night before. In college, people, especially women, judge you based on your lifestyle.
In this article, I’m going to cover 4 key elements of a “cool guy” lifestyle that you must master in order to be popular in college. They are, your social connections, how much fun you have, your fashion and style, and your living space.
1. Social connections Popular guys universally have lots of high status friends. If you want to be popular in college start by becoming well known around campus, introducing yourself to as many people as you can, and making friends with other popular people. When a girl goes out on a date with you, probably one of the top 5 things she’s trying to figure out about you, is whether you are well connected socially. If you ask her to the movies, and she brings her friends, but you have few or no cool friends who come along, this is subtly says that you have a weak lifestyle.
Are you in tune with the social scene? If you want to be popular, know what’s going on with the social scene. Get connected or better yet, become the connector. Be the one who keeps everyone informed with what’s going on.
An easy an effective way to be popular, is to start doing something that forces you to meet a lot of people fast. You can: Join a frat, or sports team, start a band, become a promoter, or be a dj. Tending bar is always great. Working for a bar or club is always good in general, because you get to let your friends get cool club perks. If you want to be popular exponentially faster, connect other people. As you connect people constantly, they start doing the same for you.
2. Fun How much fun surrounds your life? Do you know how to have fun? Are you the guy who goes MIA in the social scene for three weeks?
Always consider how you can add adventure and thrill to the social group. Your social group will reward you with higher status and you will be popular if you give them the kind of fun they will never forget. If you haven’t been responsible for getting all of your friends to have a food fight, or go streaking or skinny dipping, then you do not have the fun lifestyle that I am talking about. If a girl knows that she will most likely never have that kind of fun with you, she will rule out the possibility of a TON of unadulterated sexual attraction towards you, not to mention your chances to be popular will evaporate.
Some other fun group activities to be popular include: breaking the rules (don’t say I told you though), sky diving, go to Cancun for spring break, have some wicked drama (but don’t start it), group Sunday breakfast after the club on Saturday, other fun group activities – my friends like paintball.
3. Fashion & Style A good fashion sense is important. Don’t walk around looking like a messed. You are destroying your chances at being popular and meeting more women for no good reason. Always make sure that you are above the minimum standard. Beyond that, it’s also important not to dress too much better than the social group. If you are one of the few who know how to be popular, good style is always about dressing a notch better than everyone else. If you’re dress like you’re trying to look better than everyone else, people with think you are arrogant or try hard.
Your sense of fashion essentially communicates how socially savvy you are. It also conveys your identity and your social status. I will just say that whether or not you cultivate your style or fashion, be aware as to WHY you have style or lack it. The real faux pas of bad taste comes when you don’t know you have bad taste.
If you have style great, if you don’t why? Some people don’t want to participate in the materialistic nature of society, and they make fun of metro sexual dudes who do – and that’s cool.
4. Your Living Space If you want to know how to be popular, you must have a living space that is conducive to being social. Do you have a cool roommate who is socially in tune? Is your house a fun place to be? If your house is looks like a dump, trashy people will want to go there. If your house has a chill atmosphere, chill fun people will want to go there. Some aspects of being chill include: Good music – This is a huge component to having a cool house. Quiet living spaces, are a common trait of guys who don’t know how to be popular. A good play-list can move a group’s emotions from mellow, to excited, to aroused. If you have weak music, you are selling yourself short big time.
A central location – is your house easy to get to? It’s impossible to become the social hub if you are not easy to hang out with. If you don’t live in a cool fraternity, are there cool guys who live near you? In this case, I’ve come to the conclusion that often times there is an area where cool guys are “known” to live. You can be popular and have higher social value simply by living there. You can also be labeled as a loser if you live in an area where dorks are known to live.
Nice lighting – make sure your room isn’t lit like some office building. Dimmers are always a good idea. Mood is everything for a group.
A nice bed – The bigger and comfier you bed looks, the better. Invest in a king size bed if you can, and at least get the best sheets and pillows you can afford. When a girl sees your bed, she should immediately want to jump in it.
Something unique that makes your pad stand out above any other dude’s pad. If you have two cool dogs, or maybe you get a movie projector to watch flicks with super style. What about being the beer pong pad?
Stuff on the wall – make sure that your walls don’t have anything corny, like lesbians making out, or the Scarface poster, etc. What you keep on your wall are a sure giveaway as to who you are inside. Make sure that your wall is filled with things that an interesting cool guy would have. How about interesting cool art?
